Cool Facts
Hybrid fruit. Lemons aren't purely natural, they're actually a mix between citron and bitter orange. Two different citrus fruits combined to create the lemon we know today.
Ancient mystery. Scientists think lemons first grew in northeastern India around 1,000 BC, making them over 2,000 years old. But exactly how and where lemons started is still a little mysterious.
Evergreen trees. Lemon trees stay green and leafy all year round, even in winter. This means they can keep making fruit without losing their leaves like many other plants do.
Family connection. Lemons belong to a plant family called Rutaceae, which includes lots of other citrus fruits like oranges, limes, and grapefruits. They're all cousins in the fruit world.
