The Maasai People

Native Language Maa. The Maasai speak Maa, a Nilotic language related to languages spoken by other groups like the Dinka and Nuer across East Africa. Most younger Maasai also speak Swahili and English, the official languages of Kenya and Tanzania.

Home in East Africa. The Maasai live in northern, central, and southern Kenya, as well as northern Tanzania, near the region called the African Great Lakes. This area has been their homeland for generations.

Eastern Nilotic Group. The Maasai belong to the Eastern Nilotic ethnic family, which means they share language roots and cultural connections with other groups across the Nilo-Saharan region of Africa.

Traditional and Modern Life. While some Maasai elders in rural areas keep traditional ways of living, most Maasai today speak modern languages like Swahili and English alongside their native tongue.
