Last dinosaur chapter. The Maastrichtian was the very last age of the Late Cretaceous Period, meaning dinosaurs ruled Earth during this entire time until the very end.

Million year span. This age lasted about 6 million years, from 72.2 million years ago until 66 million years ago.

Named after a city. The Maastrichtian gets its name from Maastricht, the capital city of Limburg province in the Netherlands, where scientists studied rocks from this time period.

Between two ages. The Maastrichtian came right after the Campanian age and right before the Danian age in Earth's history.
