Banded green gemstone. Malachite is famous for its gorgeous swirling green stripes and bands that look like nature's artwork. These patterns form when copper-rich water drips and layers mineral deposits over thousands of years.

Made of copper. Malachite contains copper, the same metal used to make coins and electrical wires. When copper mixes with water and air deep underground, it slowly transforms into this brilliant green crystal.

Forms in wet places. Malachite grows in cracks and caverns where water seeps through the earth, carrying dissolved copper from rocks above. The water deposits tiny mineral particles that build up into the banded patterns we see.

Rare perfect crystals. Most malachite forms as rounded, bumpy masses or flows like frozen waterfalls, but perfect crystals are super rare to find. Sometimes thin needle-like crystals appear inside the stone.

Polished into beauty. Decorative artisans love malachite because when it is cut and polished, the green and black bands create stunning patterns perfect for jewelry, ornaments, and sculptures.
