Maned Wolf

Not a wolf or fox. Even though the maned wolf looks like a mix between a fox and a wolf, it is actually neither one. It is the only species in its own special group called Chrysocyon, making it one of the most unique canines on Earth.

South American home. Maned wolves live in Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, and Paraguay. They once lived in Uruguay too, but they are almost extinct there now.

Fancy red markings. The maned wolf has markings that look similar to a red fox, with reddish bronze fur and a distinctive bushy mane running along its neck and back.

Darker pups. Baby maned wolves are born with much darker fur than their parents. As they grow up, their fur becomes the beautiful bronze color of adult maned wolves.

Tall and slender. The maned wolf is larger than most canines, with long, thin legs that help it walk through tall grass and see over the landscape where it hunts.
