Birthday Celebration. Mawlid marks the day Prophet Muhammad was born, and Muslims around the world celebrate it with special prayers, feasts, and gatherings. It happens on the 12th or 17th day of Rabi I, which is the third month in the Islamic calendar.

A Lunar Calendar Date. The Islamic calendar is based on the moon's cycles, so Mawlid falls on a different date in the regular calendar every year. This is because the lunar year is shorter than the solar year we usually use.
