The Middle Ages

Castles ruled the land. During the Middle Ages, powerful lords built massive stone castles to protect themselves and show off their wealth. These fortresses became the centers of medieval life, with knights, servants, and families all living within their thick walls.

Knights had a code. Medieval knights followed chivalry, a strict set of rules about honor, bravery, and treating others fairly. They trained their whole lives to master sword fighting and horsemanship.

Monks saved knowledge. Christian monks in monasteries carefully copied books by hand and preserved ancient knowledge that might have been lost forever. They were often the only people who could read and write.

Farming fed everyone. Most people in the Middle Ages were peasants who farmed land owned by nobles. They owed the lord part of their crops in exchange for protection.

Three ages, one era. Historians divide the Middle Ages into the Early Middle Ages, the High Middle Ages, and the Late Middle Ages, each with its own style and challenges.
