What they are. Renaissance fairs (or 'faires') are outdoor festivals where actors, musicians, and visitors dress in period costumes and recreate the atmosphere of medieval Europe and the Renaissance period. People perform plays, joust on horseback, make crafts, and sell handmade goods just like they did hundreds of years ago.

When they happen. Most Renaissance fairs run during fall and early spring weekends, though some stay open longer or happen in summer. Many fairs are annual events that happen at the same location every year, becoming beloved traditions in their communities.

Medieval and Renaissance times. These fairs celebrate two different but neighboring historical periods: the Medieval era (roughly 500 to 1500 CE) and the Renaissance (1300 to 1600 CE), when art, science, and exploration exploded across Europe.

Entertainment galore. Visitors can watch sword fights, comedic performances, and live music, or try their hand at archery, axe throwing, and other historical activities. Food vendors serve turkey legs, mead (honey wine), and other foods inspired by the era.
