Three continents meet. The Mediterranean Sea is surrounded by Europe to the north, Africa to the south, and Asia to the east, making it one of the most important crossroads in the world.
Almost completely enclosed. Land surrounds the Mediterranean Sea on almost all sides, creating a protected body of water that is much calmer than the open ocean.
Connected to other seas. The Mediterranean connects to the Atlantic Ocean through the Strait of Gibraltar (only 9 miles wide!), to the Black Sea through the Bosporus Strait in Turkey, and to the Red Sea through the Suez Canal.
Right in the middle. The Strait of Gibraltar separates Spain in Europe from Morocco in Africa by just 14 kilometers, making it one of the narrowest and most famous sea passages on Earth.
Gateway for ships. For thousands of years, traders and explorers have used the Mediterranean Sea to travel between Europe, Africa, and Asia, making it one of history's busiest waterways.
