Musical wanderers. Minstrels traveled from town to town during the Middle Ages, entertaining people in castles, villages, and marketplaces. They were like the rock stars of their time, except they had to walk everywhere.

Many talents. Early minstrels could juggle, do acrobatics, tell jokes, or play pranks, not just sing. They were basically one-person entertainment shows who could do whatever it took to make people laugh and have fun.

Music specialists. By the 1500s, minstrels focused mainly on playing instruments and singing songs. They became known for their skill with lutes, harps, and other stringed instruments that made beautiful melodies.

Court entertainers. Rich nobles and kings loved hiring minstrels to perform at fancy banquets and celebrations. A skilled minstrel could become famous and earn good money by entertaining the powerful people of Europe.

Storytellers too. Many minstrels sang long ballads and epic poems about heroes, love, and adventure. Their songs helped tell important stories and legends before books were easy to come by.
