Two-part shell homes. Mussels have shells made of two parts connected by a hinge, kind of like a living jewelry box. Their shells are longer and skinnier than most clams.

Filter feeding superstars. Mussels are like living water filters. They pull water through their bodies and trap tiny bits of food and algae to eat, which keeps water clean for everyone else.

Sticky rope makers. Mussels create special threads called byssal threads that act like underwater glue, letting them stick firmly to rocks so waves can't wash them away.

Water and land lovers. You can find mussels in both salty ocean water and fresh rivers and lakes all around the world.

Food for humans and animals. Humans eat mussels as seafood, and they're also an important snack for starfish, crabs, and other ocean creatures.
