Nomura's Jellyfish

Enormous ocean giant. Nomura's jellyfish is one of the largest jellyfish in the entire world, belonging to the same size class as the famous lion's mane jellyfish. These creatures can grow to massive proportions in the waters of East Asia.

Fishery troublemaker. When Nomura's jellyfish appear in huge numbers, they can harm fishing industries because there are so many of them and they're so big. Fishermen sometimes have trouble catching other fish when jellyfish blooms occur.

Edible but ordinary. People in some places do eat Nomura's jellyfish, but it's not considered a delicious or high-quality food. It's just one of the ways people try to use them when blooms happen.

Medical promise. Scientists are studying the jellyfish's venom to see if it could be useful for medicine and health treatments. By finding new uses for these giant jellyfish, researchers hope to turn a problem into something helpful.

One unique species. Nomura's jellyfish is the only species in its entire genus, called Nemopilema. This makes it scientifically special and one of a kind.
