Harvest celebration. Onam marks the end of the monsoon season and the beginning of the harvest in Kerala, a state in southern India. People celebrate the bounty of crops and give thanks for a good year.

The kind king returns. According to legend, Onam celebrates the annual visit of King Mahabali, a wise and generous Asura ruler who once governed Kerala. Even though he no longer lives, people believe his spirit returns during Onam to see how his people are doing.

Magical flower carpets. Families create stunning floor decorations called Pookalam using colorful flowers arranged in beautiful circular patterns. These flower carpets are made fresh each day of the festival and can include thousands of blooms.

Grand parades and shows. Onam features vibrant cultural events including boat races, traditional music and dance performances, and elaborate parades with elaborately decorated boats. The famous Kerala boat races showcase long, narrow boats with teams of rowers singing traditional songs.

Festive family feasts. People prepare special traditional meals called Onam Sadhya, which include rice, curries, pickles, and sweets. Families gather together to share these elaborate feasts and celebrate with loved ones.
