Built to Last. Opportunity was designed to work for only 90 sols (Martian days), but it kept going for 5,111 sols. That means it worked 57 times longer than NASA planned, which is like expecting a toy to run for one day and having it work for almost two months instead.

Solar-Powered Explorer. Instead of running out of battery, Opportunity recharged itself using solar panels that caught the sun's rays on Mars. It also hibernated during big dust storms to save power, kind of like how you might stay in bed during a snowstorm to stay warm.

Amazing Distance. By the time Opportunity stopped communicating with NASA in 2018, it had traveled 45.16 kilometers across the Martian surface. That's like walking almost 28 miles, which is incredibly far for a rover that weighs about as much as a small car.

Twin Mission. Opportunity had a twin rover called Spirit that landed on Mars three weeks earlier. Spirit got stuck in sand in 2009 and stopped working, but Opportunity kept exploring for years longer.

Changed Mars Science. Opportunity discovered evidence that water once flowed on Mars, which helped scientists understand that the Red Planet used to be very different from today. This discovery was one of the biggest finds in exploring Mars.
