Steam powers it. A paddle steamer uses a steam engine to create power, just like old steam locomotives on trains. The engine pumps steam that makes parts move back and forth, which turns the paddle wheels.

Paddle wheels turn. Big wheels with flat paddles stick out from the side or back of the ship. As the wheels spin around, the paddles push against the water and move the ship forward, kind of like if you splashed water to swim backwards.

Traveled waterways. Paddle steamers were perfect for rivers and calm waters because they didn't need deep channels like other ships. They became super popular for carrying people and goods along rivers in America and Europe during the 1800s.

Different wheel styles. Some paddle steamers had side wheels, while others had a single stern wheel at the back. Each design worked better for different types of water and travel needs.
