A Royal Showcase. Persepolis was the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire, a massive ancient Persian kingdom. The city was built on a high platform in the plains of Marvdasht in Iran, surrounded by the Zagros Mountains.

For Kings Only. This wasn't an everyday city for regular people. Persepolis was a special place where Persian kings held grand ceremonies and received visitors from across their empire to show off their power and wealth.

Built to Impress. The city featured enormous stone columns, carved reliefs showing kings and nobles, and elaborate palaces and halls. Every building and decoration was designed to demonstrate the magnificence of the Persian Empire.

World Heritage Site. Today, Persepolis is recognized as one of Iran's most important cultural treasures and is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Archaeologists continue to study its ruins to learn about ancient Persian civilization.
