Perfect Branch Look. Stick insects have long, thin bodies and legs that look so much like twigs and leaves that predators walk right past them without noticing. Their color and shape are so perfectly matched to plants that they become nearly invisible.

Ghost Insects. The name 'Phasmatodea' comes from an ancient Greek word meaning 'phantom' or 'apparition' because they seem to disappear into the vegetation around them like ghostly creatures.

Leaf Lookalikes. Some stick insects belong to a special family called Phylliidae and are known as leaf insects because they have flat, leafy wings and bodies that look almost exactly like real leaves.

Sneaky Defenses. When camouflage doesn't work and a predator gets too close, stick insects have backup plans like startling the attacker with sudden movements, sharp spines on their bodies, or even toxic secretions that taste awful.

Insanely Long Bugs. Some stick insects from certain genera are the longest insects in the entire world, making them incredible creatures despite their thin, stick like appearance.
