Pineapple

Grows on the ground. Unlike most fruits, pineapples don't grow on trees. Instead, they grow on a plant that sits low to the ground with long, sword-like leaves arranged in a rosette shape.

Originally from South America. Pineapples come from tropical parts of South America, but today they're grown all around the world in warm places like Hawaii, Costa Rica, and the Philippines.

Tough on the outside. The bumpy, golden skin protects the sweet fruit inside and is so thick that you need a sharp knife to cut through it. The name 'pineapple' comes from its pine cone-like appearance.

One plant, one fruit. Each pineapple plant produces just one fruit at a time, and after it's harvested, the plant can grow another one. A single plant can make fruit for several years.

Super important crop. Pineapples are the most valuable plant in their family (Bromeliaceae) and millions of tons are grown every year for people to eat fresh or use in juice and canned products.
