Heavy sliding gate. A portcullis is a thick metal or wooden gate with a grid pattern that guards castle doorways. Instead of swinging open and closed like regular doors, it slides straight down and up in special grooves carved into the walls on both sides.

Fortress protection. Castle defenders could drop the portcullis super fast to trap invaders or keep enemies from getting through the gateway. It was way harder to break through than a wooden door because the metal bars were so thick and strong.

Locked in place. Once the portcullis dropped all the way down, sharp spikes on the bottom would dig into the ground, making it almost impossible for attackers to lift it back up. This meant defenders had time to prepare or escape.

Clever design. The grooves that held the portcullis were built right into the stone walls of the gate tower. This smart engineering meant the gate could slide smoothly without needing fancy hinges or moving parts that could break.
