Spoken by millions. Portuguese is the fifth-most spoken native language in the world, with about 267 million people speaking it as their first language. That's more than the population of the entire United States!
Southern Hemisphere champion. Portuguese is the most widely spoken language in the Southern Hemisphere, meaning it dominates south of the equator more than any other language.
Official in eight countries. Portuguese is the official language of Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Timor-Leste. These countries span three continents.
Part of Romance languages. Portuguese belongs to the Romance language family, which means it evolved from Latin, just like Spanish, French, Italian, and Romanian. It uses the same alphabet we do.
Also co-official elsewhere. In addition to its eight official countries, Portuguese shares official status with other languages in Macau and Equatorial Guinea.
