Giant generators spin. Inside power stations, huge rotating machines called generators spin around magnets to create electricity. When a magnet moves past a conductor (a wire that electricity can flow through), it creates electric current, which is the same force that powers your lights and devices.
Connected to the grid. Power stations aren't just standalone buildings. They connect to an electrical grid, which is like a giant spider web of wires and cables that distributes electricity to homes, schools, and businesses across whole regions.
Powered by many sources. Different power stations use different energy sources to spin their generators. Some burn coal or natural gas, some use nuclear reactions, some harness wind or sun, and others use water flowing downhill to create the spinning motion needed to make electricity.
Essential infrastructure. Power stations are some of the most important buildings in the world because modern life depends on reliable electricity. Without them, we wouldn't have lights, heat, computers, hospitals, or any of the technology we use every day.
Mechanical to electrical. The key trick that happens in every power station is converting mechanical power (something spinning or moving) into electrical power that travels through wires to wherever it's needed.
