Fireworks are just the start. Pyrotechnics includes way more than fireworks. Scientists and engineers use these controlled explosions in safety matches, oxygen candles for submarines, automotive airbags, and even to help demolish buildings or blast through rock in mining.
Chemical reactions do the work. Pyrotechnics relies on exothermic reactions, which means special chemicals heat up and release energy on their own without needing an outside power source. This self-sustained reaction creates heat, light, gas, smoke, and sound all at once.
An ancient Greek name. The word pyrotechnics comes from two Greek words: pyr, which means fire, and technikós, which means art or craft. So it literally means the art and craft of fire.
Controlled and precise. Pyrotechnicians are specially trained experts who understand exactly how to mix chemicals and design explosions to create specific effects safely. They work by following strict safety rules to prevent accidents.
Multiple effects at once. A single pyrotechnic device can produce heat to warm something up, light to brighten an area, gases to inflate airbags, smoke for special effects, and sound for signals or entertainment.
