Teeth on tracks. Rack railways have a special toothed rail running between the normal rails, and the train's cog wheels mesh into those teeth like gears. This grip lets trains zoom up slopes of 100% steepness or more, while regular friction-based trains can only handle about 10%.
Born in England. The very first successful cog railway ran in England in 1812 between Middleton and Leeds. A brilliant inventor named John Blenkinsop came up with the rack-and-pinion system and patented it in 1811, making steep mountain railways possible for the first time.
Ice and snow proof. Rack railways work great in snowy mountains because the cog wheels grip the toothed rail no matter how slippery the weather gets. They also give drivers much better control when braking, which is super important on those heart-pounding descents.
Mountain climbing champs. Most rack railways are built on mountains around the world to carry tourists and goods up incredibly steep slopes. A few are even used in cities where there's a really steep hill and a regular train just wouldn't make it.
Gear power. The cog wheels on the train work just like the gears on a bicycle, catching onto the toothed rack rail to pull the whole train upward. This mechanical grip is way stronger than wheels just rolling on smooth metal tracks.
