Reel-to-Reel Audio Tape Recording

Tape between reels. The tape gets pulled from one reel, threaded through special guides and over a tape head, and attached to an empty reel on the other side. As the machine runs, the tape moves from the supply reel to the takeup reel.

Different tape widths. Reel-to-reel machines use tape that can be 1/4, 1/2, 1, or even 2 inches wide. Wider tape usually captured better quality sound.

Tape speed matters. The tape moves at different speeds like 3.75, 7.5, 15, or 30 inches per second. Faster speeds recorded higher quality sound but used up tape more quickly.

Recording and playback. The tape head assembly reads and writes sound as the spinning tape passes over it. You could record your voice, music, or other sounds and play them back later.

Manual threading required. Unlike modern recordings, you had to manually pull the tape out, thread it through the guides, and attach it to the other reel before you could use it.
