Cool Facts
Two wheeled designs. Modern roller skates usually have four wheels arranged in two pairs, kind of like how skateboards are set up. This quad wheel setup makes it easier to steer and balance.
Born from ice skates. The very first roller skates were actually just ice skates with wheels instead of a blade. People wanted to skate on pavement the same way they skated on frozen ponds.
Steering by tilting. Just like a skateboard, you turn roller skates by leaning to one side, which makes the wheels angle inward and changes your direction.
Smooth surface needed. Roller skates work best on hard, flat surfaces like concrete, hardwood floors, or smooth asphalt, not on grass or bumpy ground.
