Giant dorsal sail. Sailfish have an enormous fin on their back called a sail that stretches almost the entire length of their body. They raise and lower this sail to help corral fish into tight groups so they can eat more easily.

Fastest fish ever. Sailfish hold the world record for speed among all ocean animals, zooming through the water faster than any other fish. Their streamlined bodies and powerful tails make them incredible hunters.

Long pointy bill. Like other marlins and swordfish, sailfish have an elongated snout called a rostrum or bill. They use this special bill to slash through schools of smaller fish and make meals easier to catch.

Deep ocean dwellers. Sailfish live in the deeper, colder waters of oceans all around the world. They travel far from shore hunting for food in the pelagic zone where many other big fish also live.

Blue and gray color. Sailfish are mostly blue and gray, which helps them blend in with the ocean water. Their coloring makes them hard to spot even though they are large fish.
