Scarlet Macaw

Rainbow feathers. The scarlet macaw is painted in bold patches of red, yellow, blue, and green, making it one of the most striking birds in the world. Its bright colors help it blend in with the colorful flowers and fruits of the rainforest canopy.

American rainforests. These magnificent parrots live in humid evergreen forests from southeastern Mexico all the way down to Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Brazil. They hang out in the high branches between 1,600 and 3,300 feet above the ground.

Honduras' symbol. The scarlet macaw is so beloved that it's the national bird of Honduras, representing the country's natural beauty and tropical heritage.

Social and loud. Scarlet macaws are incredibly social birds that travel in pairs or small groups through the treetops, calling out to each other with loud, distinctive screeches that echo through the forest.

Disappearing in some places. While scarlet macaws remain common in many rainforests, they have become extinct in some areas due to habitat loss from deforestation and being caught for the pet trade.
