Snails vs. slugs. Sea snails and sea slugs are actually cousins in the same family called Gastropoda. The main difference is that snails have a hard shell on the outside to protect them, while slugs are like snails without their shells.

Mobile homes. A sea snail's shell is like a cozy house it carries everywhere. When danger comes, the snail can pull its whole body inside and seal the opening shut to stay safe.

Slow and steady. Sea snails are famous for moving slowly across the ocean floor and rocks. Some kinds, like whelks and abalones, have been around for millions of years and live in oceans all around the world.

One big foot. The word Gastropoda means 'stomach foot,' because these creatures have one muscular foot that looks like it's under their belly. They use this foot to slide along and stick to rocks in the ocean.

Rainbow shells. Sea snail shells come in amazing colors and patterns, from spirals to ridges. Each species has its own unique shell design that helps scientists tell them apart.
