Detects ground motion. Seismometers sense even tiny vibrations in the Earth, picking up ground shaking from earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and large explosions. They're so sensitive they can feel the planet move in ways humans never could.
Records and measures. A seismometer works with a timing device and recording equipment to create a seismogram, which is a visual record showing exactly how the ground shook. Today, these recordings are digital instead of on paper or film.
Maps earthquakes. Scientists use seismometers to figure out where earthquakes happened, how strong they were, and what type of movement caused them. Networks of seismometers around the world work together like a detective team.
Studies Earth's layers. By analyzing seismograph data, scientists learn about the deep structure inside our planet, including the crust, mantle, and core. Earthquake waves travel through Earth differently depending on what material they pass through.
