Semi-Trailer Truck

What it is. A semi-trailer truck has two main parts: a tractor (the engine and cab where the driver sits) and a semi-trailer (the cargo box behind it). They hook together with a fifth wheel, which is a special hitch that lets the trailer pivot and turn smoothly.

Carrying huge loads. Semi-trailer trucks are designed to haul massive amounts of freight across long distances, much more than a regular truck could carry. They're the backbone of moving everything from groceries to cars to furniture across the country.

Replaced old engines. Starting in the 1920s and going into the 1950s, semi-trailer trucks took over the job that steam-powered traction engines used to do. Trucks were faster, more reliable, and much more efficient, which made shipping things cheaper and easier.

Fifth wheel magic. The fifth wheel is the genius invention that makes a semi-trailer truck work so well. It lets the trailer rotate independently from the tractor, making tight turns possible and preventing dangerous jackknifing.

Moving the world. Without semi-trailer trucks, modern life wouldn't work the way it does, because these vehicles deliver nearly everything we buy to stores, from clothes to food to electronics.
