Sound bounces back. Sonar works by sending sound waves into the water and listening for echoes that bounce back from objects. By measuring how long the echo takes to return, sonar can figure out exactly how far away something is.
Ships use sonar daily. Naval vessels, submarines, and fishing boats rely on sonar to detect other ships, find schools of fish, and avoid underwater hazards like rocks and reefs. It's like giving ships the ability to see with sound.
Two main types. Active sonar sends out sound waves and listens for echoes, while passive sonar just listens to sounds that other ships and creatures make. Submarines often use passive sonar because it's quieter and harder to detect.
Marine animals use it too. Dolphins and whales use a natural version of sonar called echolocation to navigate and hunt in the ocean, often without seeing a thing. Scientists learned about sonar by studying how these amazing animals communicate underwater.
It travels far underwater. Sound waves travel much faster and farther through water than through air, which makes sonar incredibly useful for detecting objects miles away beneath the waves.
