Stepping Into Space. Extravehicular activity, or EVA, means an astronaut goes outside a spacecraft while traveling in outer space. This includes famous spacewalks, exploring the Moon or other planets, and even just standing through an open hatch to work on the outside of the spacecraft.

The Suit Is Everything. Since there is no air in space, astronauts cannot breathe or survive outside without a special suit. The space suit provides oxygen, protects them from extreme cold and heat, and shields them from radiation and flying space dust.

Many Nations Explore. The Soviet Union and Russia, the United States, and China have all sent astronauts to conduct EVAs. Astronauts from Canada, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, and the European Space Agency have also performed spacewalks and space work alongside these major space programs.

Beyond The Spacecraft. Astronauts use EVA for amazing missions like walking on the Moon, repairing satellites, building space stations, and exploring new worlds. Each spacewalk requires careful planning, training, and teamwork to keep the astronaut safe.
