Super soldier training. Spartan boys started military training at age 7 and trained until they were 30 years old. This made them into incredibly fierce and disciplined fighters that other Greeks feared in battle.
Laconia's powerful state. Sparta was built in the valley of the Evrotas River in southeastern Greece, in a region called Laconia. The city-state was sometimes called Lacedaemon in ancient times.
Rise to power. Around 650 BC, Sparta became one of the major military superpowers in ancient Greece. For over 300 years, until 371 BC, Sparta stayed one of the strongest and most respected military forces around.
Tough way of life. Spartans believed that training hard and being tough made them strong. They valued courage, loyalty, and victory above almost everything else in their society.
