Biggest ship ever. When the SS Great Britain launched in 1845, she was the largest passenger ship in the world, a record she held for 8 years. She was designed by the brilliant engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who created many incredible inventions and structures.

Two amazing firsts. While other ships had used iron hulls or screw propellers before, the Great Britain was the first large ship to use both together. This combination made her faster, stronger, and more reliable than wooden ships powered by paddles.

Record-breaking voyage. In 1845, the Great Britain became the first iron steamship to cross the entire Atlantic Ocean, completing the journey from Bristol to New York in just 14 days. This proved that iron ships could handle the roughest seas without breaking apart.
