Round and grippy. Steering wheels are usually circular so your hands can grip them comfortably from many angles. The round shape makes it easy to turn smoothly in either direction without thinking about it.

Connects to the wheels. When you turn the steering wheel, it sends a signal through a system of gears and rods underneath the car that makes the front wheels turn. The farther you turn the wheel, the sharper your car turns.

Different sizes and feels. Some steering wheels are smaller and lighter, while others are bigger and heavier depending on the type of vehicle. Race cars have smaller wheels for quick reactions, while trucks might have larger ones.

Power steering helps. Modern cars have power steering, which uses the car's engine to make turning the wheel easier so your arms don't get tired. Without it, turning a heavy car would feel like pushing a boulder.

High-tech upgrades. Some new cars have steering wheels with buttons and controls built right in for things like music, phone calls, and cruise control.
