Cool Facts
Made from metal plates. Plate armour was crafted from bronze, iron, or steel plates fitted together to protect a warrior's body. These plates overlapped and were attached to create a suit that could cover the entire person.
Built on earlier armour. Plate armour evolved from coats of plates, which were cloth garments with metal plates sewn on. Soldiers wore these over chain mail during the 14th century before developing full suits of solid plate.
Peak of medieval warfare. Full plate steel armour developed in Europe during the Late Middle Ages, especially during the Hundred Years' War between England and France. Knights and soldiers wore these suits to protect themselves in major battles.
Heavy but effective. Although plate armour was very heavy, it protected warriors from sword strikes, arrows, and other medieval weapons. The solid metal plates were much more effective at stopping attacks than earlier types of armour.
