Van Gogh's Sunflowers Paintings

Two different series. Van Gogh painted sunflowers twice, once in Paris in 1887 and again in Arles about a year later. The Paris paintings showed flowers lying on the ground, while the Arles paintings showed bunches of sunflowers standing in vases.

A gift for his friend. Van Gogh created these paintings partly to honor his friend Paul Gauguin, who had received two of the Paris sunflower paintings. The artist hoped the beautiful flowers would impress Gauguin and make him feel welcome.

Room decoration dream. Van Gogh prepared the sunflower paintings to decorate the guestroom of his Yellow House in Arles, where he hoped Gauguin would come to stay. He wanted his home to be special and welcoming for his friend.

Bright, joyful colors. Van Gogh used glowing yellows, warm oranges, and rich browns to paint the sunflowers, creating paintings that feel full of life and happiness. The bold colors and thick brushstrokes make the flowers seem to almost jump off the canvas.

Still life masterpieces. These paintings became some of the most famous still life artworks in the world, showing how much beauty and meaning Van Gogh found in simple everyday flowers.
