A hidden ship. In 1938, workers digging at Sutton Hoo in Suffolk, England found a massive buried ship from around the year 600. Inside the ship was a wealthy Anglo-Saxon person, probably a king or chief, surrounded by incredible treasures.

Treasure hunters' dream. The ship contained gold jewelry, coins, weapons, decorated armor, and beautiful glass cups from faraway places. These objects show that Anglo-Saxon leaders were rich and powerful enough to trade with people across Europe.

History come alive. Because few written records survive from this period, Sutton Hoo gives us an amazing window into Anglo-Saxon life and beliefs. The burial style and objects tell us what people valued and how they imagined the afterlife.

Careful excavation. Archaeologists have dug carefully at the site since 1938, finding not just one but two Anglo-Saxon cemeteries. Each discovery adds more pieces to the puzzle of Anglo-Saxon culture.

A time capsule. The ship was buried so well that it stayed undisturbed for over 1,300 years until modern archaeologists found it. This meant the treasures inside stayed perfectly preserved, almost like opening a door to the past.
