Everest's first summiter. On May 29, 1953, Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary became the first people confirmed to have reached the summit of Mount Everest, the world's tallest mountain. They climbed together as a team and planted flags at the peak to celebrate their incredible achievement.

Born a Sherpa guide. Tenzing Norgay was born with the name Namgyal Wangdi in Nepal and became a Sherpa, which means he was part of an ethnic group famous for living in and knowing the Himalayan mountains better than anyone else. Sherpas are expert climbers who help other mountaineers reach high peaks.

Changed the world. Time magazine named Tenzing Norgay one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century because his achievement inspired millions of people to believe they could accomplish extraordinary things, no matter where they came from.

Teamwork matters. Tenzing always emphasized that he and Edmund Hillary reached the summit together as equals, showing that great adventures succeed through partnership and mutual respect, not just individual strength.
