Ancient volcanic peaks. Tongariro National Park is centered around three active and dormant volcanoes: Mount Tongariro, Mount Ngauruhoe, and Mount Ruapehu. These dramatic mountains rise thousands of meters above the surrounding landscape and create one of the most spectacular wilderness areas in the world.

A historic first. Established in 1894, Tongariro was the oldest national park in New Zealand and the sixth national park ever created anywhere on Earth. It showed the world that countries could protect wild places for everyone to enjoy forever.

An amazing walk. The famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing is one of the world's best day hikes, taking adventurers across volcanic terrain, past turquoise lakes, and through colorful geothermal areas. It's a challenging but incredible journey through the park's wild heart.

World heritage treasure. UNESCO recognized Tongariro as a World Heritage Site because it combines stunning natural features with deep cultural importance to the Maori people. The mountains are sacred and hold stories and meanings that have been central to the local Iwi (tribes) for centuries.

Unique ecosystems. The park protects rare alpine plants, native birds found nowhere else in the world, and volcanic ecosystems that are constantly shaped by geothermal activity and volcanic forces.
