The loud bell. Town criers rang bells loudly to get everyone's attention before they made announcements. The sound would echo through streets and bring people running out of their homes and shops.

Official newsmaker. These criers worked for the king or local government and announced important news like laws, market times, lost animals, and big events. They were like the human version of today's emergency alerts.

Fancy dressed role. Town criers wore special uniforms and often carried a bell or staff to show they had authority. Everyone knew to stop and listen when they saw the crier coming down the street.

Before newspapers existed. From medieval times until printing and newspapers became common, town criers were how ordinary people heard the news. Without them, most people would have no idea what was happening in their own town.

Still around today. Some towns in Britain and other countries still have town criers as a tradition, ringing their bells at special events and celebrations.
