Protected by the world. World Heritage Sites are special places like ancient temples, historic cities, and natural wonders that are protected by UNESCO, an organization that works for all countries together. Over 1,200 sites around the globe have this protection.

Considered outstanding. To become a World Heritage Site, a place must be truly exceptional and meaningful to all of humanity, not just one country. It might be the only place like it in the world, or it might show us something vital about human history or nature.

International treaty agreement. World Heritage Sites are protected by a special agreement called a treaty that almost every country in the world has signed. This means governments promise to take care of these places and keep them safe for future generations.

Cultural and natural treasures. Some World Heritage Sites are famous buildings, ancient cities, or burial grounds made by humans. Others are incredible natural places like rainforests, coral reefs, or mountains that show us how amazing our planet is.

Carefully chosen. Sites aren't automatically protected just because they're old or pretty. UNESCO experts study each place carefully to make sure it truly has outstanding value and importance to humanity before it gets the official World Heritage label.
