Home of Congress. The Capitol is where the Senate and House of Representatives meet to debate and create new laws. It's basically the headquarters of the legislative branch, which is one of the three main parts of the U.S. government.

Center of the city. Even though it's not exactly in the middle of Washington, D.C. anymore, the Capitol is the starting point for how the city numbers its streets and divides itself into four sections. All roads kind of radiate out from this building.

Elegant white building. The Capitol is built in a neoclassical style, which means it has columns, grand domes, and a white exterior that makes it look impressive and official. This style matches the other big government buildings nearby.

Eastern end location. You'll find the Capitol Building sitting at the eastern end of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., which is a long, beautiful park filled with museums and monuments.

Iconic landmark. The Capitol Building's distinctive dome is one of the most recognizable symbols of the United States government and appears on money, stamps, and in countless photographs.
