Cool Facts
Blood-only diet. Vampire bats are the only mammals on Earth that eat nothing but blood. They drink from animals like cattle, birds, and other creatures to survive.
Built for blood. Vampire bats have special heating sensors on their face that detect warm blood flowing under the skin of other animals, helping them find the perfect spot to bite.
Tiny knife teeth. Their super-sharp front teeth are so small and precise that their victims barely feel the bite. They use special chemicals in their saliva to keep blood flowing and prevent it from clotting.
Night hunters. Vampire bats hunt only at night and can walk on the ground on their strong front legs, which is unusual for bats. They are fast and agile, making them sneaky hunters in the dark.
Social sharers. These bats are super social and sometimes share food by regurgitating blood to feed hungry friends or family members who couldn't hunt that night.
