28 giant telescopes. The Very Large Array, or VLA, has 28 massive radio telescopes, each as tall as a 27-story building. They work together like a team to catch radio waves from outer space that our eyes cannot see.
Catches invisible waves. While regular telescopes see light, the VLA catches radio waves, which is like being able to hear whispers from across the universe. Radio waves pass right through clouds and dust that would block regular light.
Telescopes on tracks. Each of the VLA's giant telescopes sits on railroad tracks so scientists can move them around. By spreading them out or bringing them closer together, astronomers can change what they see and how clearly they see it.
Amazing discoveries. Using the VLA, scientists have studied black holes, watched brand new planets forming around baby stars, and explored the mysterious center of our Milky Way galaxy. This telescope has helped answer some of the biggest questions about space.
Located in New Mexico. The VLA sits in a remote desert called the Plains of San Agustin in central New Mexico, far from city lights and radio signals that could interfere with its work.
