Your balance brain. Your vestibular system is tucked deep inside your inner ear and works like a built-in gyroscope that tells your brain which way your head is tilted or moving. It sends signals constantly, even when you're standing still, so your body knows how to stay upright.
Spinning sensors inside. The vestibular system has tiny curved tubes filled with fluid and special hair-like cells that detect movement. When you spin around or tilt your head, the fluid sloshes around and makes those hairs bend, sending messages to your brain about your motion.
Works with your muscles. Your vestibular system connects directly to your muscles and tells them how to balance your body instantly. This is why you can walk while looking at your phone or close your eyes and touch your nose, your body knows where it is in space.
Neighbor to hearing. The vestibular system sits right next to the cochlea, the part of your ear that handles hearing. They share the same snail-shaped space called the labyrinth in your inner ear, working as a team.
Why you get dizzy. When you spin fast and then stop suddenly, your vestibular fluid keeps sloshing around for a moment even though your body has stopped. Your brain gets confused about which direction is up, which is what makes the world feel like it's spinning.
