Honors Military Service. Veterans Day is a federal holiday when Americans celebrate and thank all the people who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, not just those who died in battle.

The 11th Hour Matters. The holiday falls on November 11 because that's the exact date and time World War I ended, at 11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, making it easy to remember.

Renamed in 1954. The day was originally called Armistice Day, but veteran groups wanted a name that honored all soldiers, so Congress changed it to Veterans Day to include everyone who ever served.

Global Celebration. Many countries around the world also celebrate on November 11 with their own versions, like Armistice Day in France and Remembrance Day in Canada and the UK, all marking the end of World War I.

Ways to Show Respect. People honor veterans by attending parades, visiting cemeteries, flying flags, and taking time to thank soldiers and veterans they know personally.
