Holds things still. A vise has two jaws that squeeze an object firmly between them, keeping it from moving around while you saw, drill, sand, or hammer it.

Screw makes it squeeze. One jaw is fixed in place, while the other jaw moves in and out by turning a handle attached to a screw, giving you control over how tight the grip is.

Jaws come in styles. The jaws can be flat and smooth, or they might have grooves and teeth to grip different shapes without slipping, from metal rods to wooden blocks to delicate pieces.

Used everywhere. Vises show up in workshops, garages, metal shops, and woodworking studios because they let people work on one thing with both hands free.

Makes jobs safer. By holding your workpiece rock solid, a vise prevents accidents because you are not trying to balance something while cutting or grinding it.
