Made of molecules. Water is made of tiny molecules, each containing two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom bonded together. This special arrangement gives water its amazing properties.

Covers Earth. Water fills most of our planet, forming oceans, rivers, lakes, and even invisible water vapor in the air. It is the most abundant substance on Earth's surface.

Lives inside everything. Every living thing, from humans to plants to bacteria, contains water inside its cells. Water helps carry nutrients and keep organisms working properly.

Universal solvent. Water is called the universal solvent because it can dissolve more substances than any other liquid. This means salt, sugar, and minerals all dissolve into water easily.

Powerful bonds. Water molecules stick to each other with special forces called hydrogen bonds, which is why water forms droplets and why it can climb up plant roots against gravity.
