Vine that climbs. Watermelons grow on scrambling, trailing vines that spread across the ground or climb up supports, kind of like how ivy creeps along a fence.

Mostly water inside. A watermelon is about 92% water, which is why it's so juicy and refreshing on hot days, and also why it's lighter than you might expect.

Grown all over Earth. People cultivate watermelons in nearly every warm part of the world, from Africa (where they originally came from) to Asia, Europe, and the Americas.

Part of gourd family. Watermelons belong to the Cucurbitaceae family, the same plant family as cucumbers, pumpkins, and squash.

Hundreds of seeds inside. Those black or white seeds inside are how the plant makes babies, though some watermelons are bred to have few or no seeds for easier eating.
